Why Counting Calories when trying to Lose Weight is a 'Waste of Time'

It’s on everyone's mind.

How many calories will this exercise burn? How many calories are in this meal? How many calories will I need to burn to achieve my daily goal?

Here are 5 Things You Can Do Right Now to Stop Counting Calories

  1. Be sensible.
No one is saying you can’t have pizza.
But, if you are trying to lose weight, how often you have that pizza needs to reflect your healthier intentions. A once a month pizza night can be like giving yourself a little reward. You achieved something, you earned that little reward. And, isn’t that so much nicer than fretting about calories?

  2. Get rid of all the junk food in your kitchen pantry.
Try to avoid those aisles while grocery shopping. If you don’t have it, you won’t reach for it. Fill your pantry with healthier alternatives. Keep fresh fruit and veggies at eye level. Choose whole grains over bleached and processed flours. Take your time while shopping, read the ingredients lists. You’d be surprised how many hidden sugars are in something as unassuming as a slice of plain white bread.

  3. If you are exercising regularly, a good rule of thumb is “Calories In = Calories Out”.
If you are trying to lose weight, you will need to burn more calories than you may be used to.
Your food choices will directly affect your body’s ability to function at its best.
Of course, after exercising it’s completely natural to feel very hungry. After all, your body just worked hard for you!
Now, I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like I could eat someone’s arm after I finish a tough routine. But, that pizza, that spoonful of Nutella, or those fries will turn into sugars, and the sugars will turn into fat. FAST.
They may be delicious, but they are almost entirely starch (which is essentially sugars), fat, and sodium.

So, let’s think a moment, will that bowl of fries be good for your body at that moment? Again, think of the muscles you just used.
Will those fries satisfy your body’s real cravings? The answer is No!
To rebuild muscle fibers, you need protein! You would be denying your body the chance to repair itself by withholding the protein it craves to do its job.
Which brings us right back to point 1. Be sensible.

  4. Stop obsessing about food.
The more you think about calories, the more you think about food. You run the risk of becoming a slave to your worries about food and calories.
And, once your mindset is fixed there, you forget to enjoy life.
Endlessly counting calories will leave you exhausted. It is mentally restrictive.
You don’t get to enjoy your food, because you are a slave to those numbers.

    Enjoying food is important!

Ultimately, this is about changing your mindset. A bowl of fresh sugary fruit is a healthier choice than toast with Nutella, but both are sweet, and both have a lot of calories. Did you know a fruit salad with fresh mangos, bananas, blueberries, and kiwis contains approximately 107 calories per cup? But, only 2 tablespoons of Nutella is 200 calories! In the fruit salad, you have fiber, vitamins, simple sugars, and long chain carbohydrates which take longer to digest.
In the Nutella, you have mostly fat and sugars. I think we all know which option is going to be more satisfying in the long run.

  5. Get rid of the guilt.
ENJOY eating real foods. ENJOY your activities. Stop feeling guilty about the numbers; exercising and eating well will naturally shape your body the way you want it.
It is a cyclic process, eating and exercise go hand in hand. When you eat well your body feels good, and your energy level increases.
When you exercise regularly your metabolism rev’s up. And, not just during activity, it stays up long after you’ve completed that last plié.
It’s a vicious happy circle; and, once you get that circle moving, it’s not so easy to stop. You’ve created new healthier habits.

The more comfortable are with yourself, the more you will want to accomplish, and the more you will want to continue this journey.

You may be thinking, “this is impossible,” or “I might do it at some point,” or “I’m not ready to start a diet.”

But I’m not asking you to deprive yourself the pleasure of eating. I’m simply reminding you that you can feel better, and look better, once you decide to change your mindset and lifestyle.

Even if you are busy and the only thing you can find are ready meals, just pause and ask yourself “Which one is going to be better for me? Which one is going to make me feel sleepy, bloated, or sick? Which one will make me feel satisfied and energized?”

Your body will respond to the changes you want, but the first thing you must do is want it.
