What Ballet Taught Me about Life and Decluttering

Spring is in the air!

And with that fresh spring breeze comes a sense of urgency to clear out our space- hence, SPRING CLEANING!

Spring represents rebirth, new beginnings, regeneration- so, it’s no surprise, we get an itch to declutter and clear out everything we've held onto through the cold dark winter.

You may think, like so many do, that professional athletes/dancers must simply be born with heaps of self-discipline and control. And, while this may be true for some, most of us have had to learn through experience. Self-discipline and self-control are behavioral and mental patterns we practice regularly, improving little by little.

A lot of a professional ballet dancer's life is already very structured. But what we bring with us, how to take care of ourselves and our needs while on tour, these are things we still need to have a sense of personal control over. And this is something we learn how to do overtime.

‘Ballerina On Tour’ Method

Which brings me to the "Ballerina On Tour" method. After packing for a tour, I met the rest of the group with bags and bags of luggage. They immediately seized the opportunity to tease and say, "Who are you? Margot Fonteyn on tour?!"

But they had a good point. Did I really need all of this stuff with me, weighing me down? No! I didn't need three suitcases full of "stuff." I only needed what was most important to me, what was most valuable to me, what I really needed to have with me while away. All of this physical baggage, all the luggage, was only going to slow me down with excessive weight I didn't need.

"Ballerina On Tour" simply means keeping the most essential items, thoughts, and feelings with you and leaving the heavy negative "baggage" of life behind.

Our mindset, our thoughts, and feelings, also need some spring cleaning of their own. We need to let go of the mental and emotional clutter we keep within, so we can keep moving forward in life. We don't want to hold onto the past. We want to learn from it, cherish the moments and lessons that are the most valuable to us, then put them down and keep moving ahead.

We want to feel free and bright. Clearing and decluttering our environment is one way we can symbolically "clear" our mental and emotional spaces too. We want to clear out and release the mental/emotional "baggage" in our lives- so we can look to the future, rather than hold on to the past.

To help you keep moving forward, my advice to you is, and I hope you give a try, is to Clear Out and Declutter 1 Room in your life. See how it makes you feel to throw out the clutter and clear out the dust so you can let in some light.

If we are going to move forward in life, we must first let go of the things that hold us back. Throw out the old, unused, and outdated clutter and make room for the new, fresh, and exciting times ahead.
