Why New Year's Resolutions Don't Work and What to Do Instead

Today is the day you can start fresh, you can start new, and you feel invincible!

Happy New Year, Beautiful Lazies!
Today is the day you can start fresh. You can start new. And you can feel invincible!
I want to give you an extra spark of motivation, to help you start this year at full speed- and how and why you should.

Maybe you've been procrastinating, or perhaps even hoping for something to magically happen to you. You may feel fed up, tired of spinning your wheels, or sick of feeling stuck- you've reached a point where you finally say, "Enough is Enough."

You might feel a sense of urgency, desperately hoping for a quick fix, but this is not about that.

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions. They're an excellent route to failure. New Year's resolutions are often unrealistic goals set at a time of fatigue and frustration- not the best time to set a goal. Nonetheless, I also understand how you may have found yourself here today- striving to start the year with new ideas and an abundance of will.

You have to promise yourself you can do it.

Please don't expect me to have a magic Harry Potter wand to make it all happen for you. There is no magic pill, and nothing can magically fall into your lap. You have to put the work in yourself.
And believe me when I say that you won't let anyone down but yourself.

Here's why New Year's resolutions never work- You tell yourself to get so many things accomplished, but you don't yet possess the habits you need to act like the new person you want to be.

For many, the first thing you do is sign yourself up at the gym. But you also want to start learning about nutrition- you want to know what foods are right for you. You want to find out what exercises are suitable for you, and how to do them properly so they're effective. You want the guidance of a coach, a nutritionist, a trainer, etc.

It becomes too much too soon, too overwhelming- and the result is you abandon your brilliant plan. You give up.

Why?

Because your "WHY" is either not strong enough or you don't know the real reason you're doing all of this.

"Why" is the question you have to ask yourself every time you want to achieve something.
Why do I really want to get fit? Why do I want to take on ballet? Why do I want to lose weight? Why do I want to gain strength?

New Habits need to be implemented gradually, habits don't change overnight, and new routines and skills are not won that way either.
Have you ever known anyone to gain or lose weight overnight? No! Consistent Habits, good or bad, have led you to be this way. And only hard work and implementation of new habits every day, for months, or years will give you results.

Creating new habits is never easy. But let's take something very simple like brushing your teeth- You never forget to do it, why is that? Because it's a habit! You've engrained it into your routine since you were a kid, and, since then, you've never forgotten to brush your teeth.

Sometimes habits are not enough, though.

You need to have a strong reason to keep going. There will be times when you might feel like you're falling backward, or you're not as motivated, or things are getting really tough. Knowing your Why will be the motivation that makes you want to "pull up your sleeves," beat procrastination, and keep going.

Setting Goals, having a clear plan for every day, for every month is the key to not getting lost on your path.
Things like organizing your day in an efficient way, to master your morning, if you are an early bird, or master your evening if you have more energy in the afternoon, are all fantastic ways to improve the way you live.
Achieving each milestone you've set for yourself will be another essential ingredient to your success.

It's like following a recipe- we all know what the end product should look like. But you can't mix ingredients randomly or add extra just "because." Following step-by-step instructions will show you how to create that beautiful dish. It takes time, effort, and a specific way of implementing each ingredient. The same applies to your goals in life.
